Background
The tiles were developed by by Adriano Gemelli, Artist/Sculptor,
while researching the possibilities of using holographic materials as
an art medium. In the process he developed a new different way for creating
tiles that are 'alive'; ever changing and interactive with the viewer.
The process also allows creative and design input from "the buyer".
The technique/medium was granted a patent in 1998.
Properties
Volatiles are fabricated by laminating glass and can be designed using
a wide range of holographic and other materials encapsulated in the
glass. 23k gold and oxidised metals (e.g. brass, copper, silver) can
be combined with the holographic medium to create a visually unique
aesthetic tile. The tiles can be opaque or transparent to match design
options and are available in sizes ranging from 100mm X 100mm to 600mm
X 600mm. Depth of the tiles can range from 4mm through to 25mm. Larger
sizes for table tops are also available.

Appearance
VolaTiles engage the viewer with dynamic shapes and colours which change
according to the light and with every movement of the viewer. What looks
vivid from one aspect can be beautifully subdued from another. The viewer
can never become complacent in this changing visual presentation. When
light shines on the tiles, the holograhic medium used reflects back
various colours of the spectrum from various angles of viewpoint. This
is a designed controllable effect. Animation effects will occur as the
viewer moves around the room.

Installation
They can be used in domestic situations as cameo tiles, or in corporate
environments e.g. large scale murals designed for site specific situations
and events. Because the tiles reflect colour from light, they can be
used for special effects in different lights and at different times
of the day. More intense collimated light sources (i.e. halogen spotlight)
produce a more vibrant spectral colour.
Various
adhesives can be used with the glass tiles (Volatiles) - silicon adhesive
being the most common and can be applied to any surface to which ceramic
tiles can be fixed. Large scale and mosaic installations have special
requirements - contact the artist to discuss in depth.

Price
Individually handmade tiles (Volatiles) incorporating 23k gold, silver,
brass and copper with holographic material start from $75.00 for a 300mm
X 300mm tile.
Handmade Volatiles constructed entirely of glass and holospectral material
start from $150.00 for a 300mm x 300mm tile.
Prices will vary according to the size of the tile, the number of tiles
ordered and, if required any customisation of the tiles for site specific
needs.
Payment
For smaller orders the tiles are dispatched after the cheque has
been cleared.
For large architectural projects the method of payment is negotiated
in the initial stages of the brief.

Architectural & Interior design
VolaTiles
provide an opportunity for the business client to design and personalise
an environment for a particular purpose.
In
accordance with good design, there are several things to be considered
when coordinating a design of worth. Each project needs to be evaluated
on its individuality and the tiles created to address the particular
needs suitable to corporate or domestic application.
